Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel

  • Is a squad-based, third person tactical combat game with RPG character development and a mission-based story line.
  • Will support Continuous Turn-Based play through its Continuous Turn-Based Action System.

  • Takes place in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of the middle of North America. The player controls the main character as the leader of a squad of Brotherhood of Steel warriors. The squad consists of a maximum of six characters, including the main character.
  • Fallout is a successful established RPG license, and Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel will have the best pre-rendered graphics available in a game engine that uses turn-based tactics, with emphasis on a lesser number of units.

Key Features

Squad Based Tactics

Control a squad of up to 6 characters in any mission. Assemble your squad from a pool of around 30 recruits. Control each squad member directly to achieve a variety of tactical goals, such as Scout, Locate, Deploy, Patrol, Attack, Defend, Retrieve, Destroy, Follow and Ambush. Control vehicles in combat Statistic and skill-based character development system.

Multiplayer

TCP/IP, Mplayer, LAN. No serial, no modem. Modem play available when using Win98 or later. 8 multiplayer specific maps, plus the possibility of access to the single player missions with multiplayer characters. Up to 5 different play modes, and one specific map for each mode of play. Have a maximum of 18 players, controlling 36 squad members. "Quick game" option. Press a button, fill in the minimum of details, press a button and the game starts, allocates points to characters, balances the game, etc. To make starting a game really quick. Balancing Point System allos players to create opposing teams of equal destructive value. Timer system, from 2 seconds up per player character move in turn-based mode. Sequence Cue HUD desplays the current player/character's turn, who's up next and how soon. Team play, with shared vision between teams. Continuous Turn-Based mode for faster multi-player gameplay. Ability to monitor the action when it isn't your turn.

Characters

Up to 9 player character types. Up to 45 NPC types and critters. Specialists - Create new characters, choose from archetypes, import single player characters. Good for the first-time player. Player death - A new "dying" stage gives the other members of the squad a chance to revive their fallen comrade.

Vehicles

Move up three times faster than a man on foot. Provide armor and heavier weapons. Variety of vehicles, from single person scouts to 6 person armored carriers. Vehicle seating manifest to control which character is doing the driving. Vehicles will be able to store and carry heavy equipment. Player will be able to target the pilot, other passengers, and key points on the vehicle. Run over people!

Environment

Move through different environments, including tribal villages, barren wastelands, fallen skyscrapers, raider strongholds, pre-war industrial ruins, robot factories, snow covered military installations and Brotherhood of Steel fortresses.

Advanced Engine

Anti Aliased Sprites - characters are in the world, not just stuck on. Color swapping - multiple variations of every unit, plus team differentiation for multiplayer. Height - ability to climb buildings and lie low, giving the character Line of Sight advantage. Unlimited (within reason!) Size Maps. Interact with the environment - blow up barrels, destroy doors and other obstacles. Night and Day will have perceivable gameplay effects.

Mission Structure

25 core missions in 6 stages. Random encounters for extra experience, but not essential to the completion of the game. Interwoven consequences - completing one mission will affect other missions in that stage.

A. . Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel is a squad-based, third person tactical combat game with RPG character development and a mission-based storyline.

Q. When will the game be released?
A. We do not have a release date set in stone at this time. We are planning on a first quarter release in 2001, and we are on track to meet that date. As we get closer to release, we will update the final release date.

Q. Is it Fallout 3?
A. No, Fallout Tactics is not designed to be a sequel to the award-winning RPG line. It is a stand-alone title. Fallout 3 is a separate title that Interplay may develop in the future.

Q. When is it set?
A. Fallout Tactics takes place between the events of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2.

Q. Where is it set?
A. Fallout Tactics takes place in Middle America, ranging from Chicago to Denver.

Q. What are the environments like?
A. Middle America was not spared by the nuclear exchange. Expect to see desert wastelands, ruined cities, mountain passes, post-war dwellings, underground caverns passages and more.

Q. Will it retain its mature rating?
A. Fallout Tactics is a game aimed at a mature audience. It contains the same adult themes as Fallout 1 and Fallout 2.

Q. Will there be 3D hardware accelerator support?
A. Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel will be enhanced by most major hardware accelerator cards that support DirectX 7

Q. Will there be a demo?
A. Yes, we are planning on releasing at least one demo so that you can try the game before it is released.

 

Multi-Player

Q. Will there be multi-player?
A. Yes! Fallout Tactics has been designed with Multi-Player at its core.

Q. What kind of Multi-Player modes will there be?
A. Fallout Tactics will have both cooperative and deathmatch multi-player modes.

 

Engine

Q. Is it 2D or 3D?
A. Fallout Tactics uses 2D tile-based graphics to represent a 3D environment.

Q. Will there be height and multi-storey buildings?
A. Yes. Characters will be able to climb on top of buildings, up stairs and ladders, or plumb the depths of subways and subterranean caverns, all within a single game map.

Q. What perspective is the game from?
A. Fallout Tactics is a third-person isometric engine, similar to Fallout 1 and 2. This perspective is vital in controlling your squad members in a tactical environment.

Q. Is the game turn-based or real-time?
A. I'm glad you asked. Fallout Tactics supports both modes of gameplay, and it is up to the player to decide which mode to use in either single or multi-player. The real-time mode is called Continious Turn-Based, and is a hybrid between turn-based and real-time. CTB lets players move around at any time, but actions like firing a gun cost their character Action Points. Action Points regenerate over time. No more waiting for 20 rats to each take their turn.

Q. Will I be able to make my own maps?
A. There will be an unsupported editor for Fallout Tactics.

 

Characters

Q. Who am I?
A. The player's main character is a new recruit in the Brotherhood of Steel. The player's character is quickly promoted to the leader of a squad.

Q. How many squad members will I have?
A. The squad size ranges from one to six characters, including the main character. The player is able to choose the other five characters from a pool of around 30 characters.

Q. Can I control the squad members directly?
A. Each character is under your direct control, from the exact pieces of equipment they use to the development of their skills.

Q. Will my squad members change their appearance when I change their armour?
A. Yes.

Q. Will I be able to play as a Ghoul?
A. In multi-player, you will be able to play as Ghouls, Super Mutants, Deathclaws and the various other inhabitants of the wastelands.

 

Vehicles

Q. Will there be Vehicles?
A. Fallout Tactics will include a variety of vehicles suited to different situations.

Q. Will I be able to engage in combat while driving?
A. Yep.

Q. Will I be able to run over people?
A. Yep.

Q. Are vehicles available in multiplayer games?
A. Yes, of course!

 

Missions and Storyline

Q. Is there a story?
A. There is indeed a story, one that plays out over the course of the single-player game. The missions in the game tell and advance the storyline.

Q. What are missions?
A. The game's storyline is divided up into separate stages, each involving a variety of tasks and encounters. Each task is called a mission. There are also random encounters out in the desert.

Q. How many missions will there be?
A. There will be 25 core single-player missions, and a set of purpose-built multi-player missions.

Q. How do I complete a mission?
A. Each mission will have a variety of ways in which it can be completed successfully, from stealthy thievery to all-out war.

Q. Is it possible to revisit previous missions?
A. Once the mission is completed successfully, it is possible to return to that map. This gives the player freedom in determining his next course of action and let's the player finish uncompleted side tasks.

 

Combat

Q. How many different attacks will there be?
A. There are several different types of attacks, including Hand to Hand, Melee, Blade, Spear, Thrown, Grenade, Pistol, Sub Machine Gun, Rifle, Heavy Weapon, Min Gun, Rocket Launcher and Mines.

Q. What about setting traps?
A. There will be Traps and Demolitions skills which can be combined with certain types of equipment to allow the player to place traps.

Q. Will time of day affect gameplay?
A. The time of day that the mission is undertaken will determine the lighting level of each environment. Darkness means lower chances to perceive and hit your enemy.

Q. Will I be able to hide from my enemies?
A. Fallout Tactics uses true line of sight. This allows your character to hide behind objects and increase their cover. The use of the Sneak skill has been improved.

Q. Will my characters be able to duck?
A. All the members of a squad will be able to stand upright, crouch down on one knee, or lie prone on the ground. Each of these stances has its benefits and drawbacks.

Q. What sort of characters will I encounter?
A. Many of the character types from Fallout 1 and 2 will be making an appearance, as well as several new allies and enemies.
