Notes of Interest:
Hi! How are you? I send
you this file in order to have your advice. See
you later. Thanks. This message was received
hundreds of times by millions of Web users over
the past two weeks due to the Sircam virus,
number three on this week's list. The virus is
more annoying than destructive since opening it
automatically sends the same irksome message to
everyone in a user's email address book.
Meanwhile, tempers flared and fists began flying
during a recent Howard Stern Radio Show when
frequent show guest A.J. Benza attacked Stern
staffer Stuttering John. Since Stern's radio
shows are taped for replay on the E! Network, the
fight was caught on video and immediately posted
on the Web, sending Stern to number 15 on The
Lycos 50, his highest ranking ever. Lycos users
first went searching for the fight footage at
Stern's Web site but when the site went offline,
searchers sought anything Howard-related.
Other Notes of Interest:
For the first time since
it first appeared on The Lycos 50, 74 weeks ago,
Napster is not the top file-sharing program on
the Internet. Up-and-coming Morpheus (#13) passed
the floundering flagship of the file sharing
movement this week. In another Lycos 50 first, a
city, other than Las Vegas (#12) also made The
Lycos 50. Searches for travel hotspot Niagara
Falls (#46) have been rising steadily since
January and are now at their highest ranking
ever.
Web Users Go Ape for
Planet of the Apes:
Planet of the Apes (#21),
which exploded for a near record $68.5 million at
the box office this week makes a similar splash
on The Lycos 50. Just under the top 50 is
Planet's breakout star Estella Warren coming in
at number 52. Warren searches more than
quadrupled in the past week while searches for
Mark Wahlberg doubled, although he doesn't come
close to making this week's list. Planet also
boosted searches for the Web site, The Drudge
Report (#55) after political pundit Matt Drudge
gave away the movie's surprise ending.
