DreamWorks' $135 Million Spine-Tingling Thriller That Made You Afraid of Your VCR ... ``The Ring'' ... Available to Own on VHS and DVD March 4, 2003
The movie that made you think twice about all of the unmarked videotapes in your collection, DreamWorks' $135 million box-office hit THE RING comes to that very format on March 4, 2003. Available for sale on VHS and DVD, the critically-acclaimed psychological thriller kept audiences on the edge of their seats -- mesmerized by the mysterious powers of a cursed video tape that guaranteed an almost certain death in seven days to those ill-fated viewers of its shocking contents. Both the VHS and DVD will feature an all-new 15-minute experimental short film created by director Gore Verbinski exclusively for the video release. The short film reveals more electrifying secrets that bring viewers closer to understanding the mystery of "the Ring." The DVD will also feature specially designed animated menus that utilize elements from the deadly tape to navigate viewers through the programs. Paying homage to the film's star, the VHS format, THE RING videotape will be cleverly packaged in a limited edition see-through acetate sleeve. The clear packaging is designed to draw attention to the eerie powers of the tape in the movie. Priced for repeat viewings, THE RING is available for sell-through on VHS ($14.95 MAP) and DVD ($19.95 MAP). Coinciding with the release of THE RING, DreamWorks will also debut the original, record-breaking International cult hit that started it all, RINGU, on VHS and DVD on March 4. Highly anticipated by fans of THE RING, the RINGU DVD and VHS will feature a newly created digital film-to-video transfer of the movie, and the DVD will feature a new 5.1 Japanese Digital Surround mix. "While working with director Gore Verbinski on the bonus programs for the DVD, we all came to the conclusion that it's fun for audiences to try to unravel the mystery. The last thing we wanted to do was create featurettes that `demystify' the story or explain away the plot," said Kelley Avery, Head of DreamWorks Home Entertainment Worldwide. "The short film is the perfect enhancement for both the video and DVD. It brings viewers deeper into the plot, but the onus is on them to determine the meaning and put the pieces together." The short film is not a collection of previously used material -- it was exclusively cut for the film's video release and designed to extend the experience of the film. To view this all-new film on the DVD, those brave enough will click on a button entitled, "Don't Watch This." As the experimental film opens, static takes over the television set, followed by the indelible jagged circular white glow of "the ring." It takes the viewer deeper into the character's thoughts and lives leading up to the seven-day mark, but ultimately leaves them in a conflicted state of knowing more ... without understanding all. THE RING Synopsis It begins as just another urban legend -- the whispered tale of a nightmarish videotape that causes anyone who watches it to die seven days later. But when four teenagers all meet with mysterious deaths exactly one week after watching just such a tape, investigative reporter Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) tracks down the video ... and watches it. Now, the legend is coming true, the clock is ticking and Rachel has just seven days to unravel the mystery of THE RING. In addition to Naomi Watts ("Mulholland Drive"), THE RING also stars Martin Henderson ("Windtalkers") and features breakout roles by up-and-coming stars Daveigh Chase and David Dorfman. RINGU After record-breaking box office attendance in Japan and critical acclaim, RINGU spawned a dedicated fan-base. RINGU is based on a series of best-selling novels by Koji Suzuki -- considered the Stephen King of Japan. It was first brought to the Japanese public's attention by a TV feature that starred many of the actors who went on to appear in the theatrical version. The TV movie proved incredibly popular, and from there a screenplay was written by Hiroshi Takahashi directly from the original novel. DreamWorks SKG was formed in October, 1994, by its three principal partners -- Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen -- to produce live-action motion pictures; animated feature films; network and cable television programming; home video entertainment; records; books, toys; and consumer products.
