Developed by RareWare, who gave us Goldeneye, Killer Instinct I and II, the Donkey Kong Country series, and more recently Jet Force Gemini, continue their excellent work with Donkey Kong 64. Published by Nintendo, who is spending over 12 million dollars on advertising. The RareWare games are all exceptional, but with Donkey Kong 64 they surpass all that they have done before, because it is the biggest game ever created for the Nintendo 64. Donkey Kong 64 presents a world we already know, the Kong family versus the evil K.Rool, the lizard king. This time K.Rool has stolen your precious golden banana and kidnapped your four friends on his island of death. And the scariest part of your adventure is that the evil king plans to destroy your island with a giant laser. The game begins with an unusual presentation. A rapper presents all of the five character you can play with during your adventure. The first one, and the most famous of all is Donkey Kong fast but lazy sometimes. Diddy Kong is also back. The new member of the family is Tiny Kong she is the only one that can shrink herself. Shunky Kong is an orangutan, who can walk on his hands. And finally Lanky Kong, can scare evil lizards with his Herculean force. We can not choose Tiny, Shunky, Diddy or Lanky at the start of the game because they have been kidnapped and you have to rescue them. So you control Donkey Kong in the first adventure in the jungle. All along while you're playing a parrot helps you by giving you some hints and and tells how many golden bananas you can have with this character. DonKey Kong 64 presents many characters that are very helpful to our goal. Like the old Cranky, in his Cranky Lab, where he makes potions that gives you very helpful powers, but not for free. You have to find the coin you need to purchase items in this game. Funky Kong gives us the opportunity to buy weapons like a coconut shooter or a Grape shooter, depending on the character you control, this is not free either but he can refill it with ammunition. One of the characters is a ferret you have to help him to find his blueprint and he will give you a golden banana for each blueprint that you bring to him. Each character has his own ability and equipment. Diddy Kong is agile and funny, he can jump high with his jet pack and use a peanut pistol. He is the first friend that you can rescue from K.Rool. Tiny Kong she is quick, and she can shrink to complete your task on the eight different stages. She also shoots leaves.

"Tiny Kong" Shunky Kong can walk on his hands, stretch his arms and inflate himself. He uses a grape shooter. Lanky Kong is the last one of the Donkey Kong crew. He slow, he can not jump high but he is very strong, he uses a pineapple shooter. One thing that is original is each character has their own musical instrument (bongo, guitar, trumpet, trombone and a triangle). With these instruments you also have another watermelon of life (four quarter) and if you use it, it kills all enemies in range. It's also useful to open certain doors. Another nice feature that is interesting is the banana port. It is like a numbered cork on the ground. It can transfer you to another point in a stage with the same number. In your adventure you meet some fairies. They have been capture by K.Rool and you have to bring them back to their queen. To catch them the queen gives you a camera. You have to take a picture of them and bring them back to the queen's palace. Do not try to catch them you will never make it they are very shy and fast. If you bring back the fairies to their queen you will receive a golden banana. One fairy, one banana. Donkey Kong 64 was optimized for the expansion pack of 4 megs. That give you extraordinary special effects, explosions and even more. Also the expansion pack increases the frame rate which makes the characters and the environment move faster and more fluidly. The multiplayer mode allows us to play up to four players at the same time. All the characters are easy to control. The development team has done a great job in creating a camera that follows you everywhere with good view angles. So it makes you feel in total control of your character at all time. The adventure has eight stages and many bonus stages and mini games like a "combat ring" where you can win a K.Rool crown. In every stage all the characters can find five golden banana but it is all done in a very unique and original way. Depending on the character you are playing with and the stage you are playing on because each characters has different goals in the game. Over 200 special tasks can be accomplished in the game. Donkey Kong 64 is very massive game, it is even bigger than Zelda and a very exciting and fun game to play for many reasons, it has a lot of depth and will catch the interest of all type of gamers. |
