One of the most common kind of game for consoles is racing games. It is difficult for each one of these games to distinguish themselves from other games, but one of those does it very well: World Championship Driver. The developer, Boss Games Studios, and the publisher, Midway, succeeded in making a racing game that is far beyond the ordinary.

This game has several modes in it: the championship, practice, the quick race, and two-player mode. In the championship mode, you must choose your team and each team has some vehicles at there disposal. At the beginning, you have only two teams and two vehicles at your disposal, but as you advance in the game, new teams and vehicles are offered to you. In the two-player mode, you can choose to race with or without competitors controlled by the computer.

If you like sharper graphics, you can play in high resolution mode but the screen will become smaller instead of being full. More than 100 tracks are available to you in all: there are 10 different places and each one of these places have three different tracks and each tracks can be made backwards and mirrored.

The control of this game is difficult to assimilate and certain less advanced vehicles are more difficult to handle than others. Also, you cannot change the difficulty of the computer and it is very difficult to beat and you will have to practice a long time to finish the races first.

Unfortunately, you can't play with more than two players, that would have been a good addition. You are obliged to use the totality of the space of your controller pak to be able to save your season.

The best element of this game is definitively the graphics: we still wonder how they succeeded to make the graphics so beautiful without the expansion, because you can play in high resolution mode without it. The graphics and the landscapes are so beautiful that, sometimes, you forget that you are in a racing game and you look at the far landscapes. Also, the diversity of the play is very large: there are 33 different vehicles and 10 tracks which can be raced in more than 100 different ways. The sound is very good; when you pass from outside to inside, the noise of the engine changes.

World Driver Championship is surely the best racing game out this year for N64. With these graphics to take your breath away and all its diversity, even if it is a little difficult, this game shines in every detail. If you like to race on tracks with beautiful cars, you will not be able to live without World Driver Championship.
