Developed by Criterion Studios and published by Acclaim, Burnout is a unique and fun racing game. In Burnout your goal is to race to the finish line through a series of checkpoint as quickly as possible. Sound quite simple but not that easy to do because you will race through city streets where there is real traffic. In order to reach each checkpoint you need to race extremely fast therefore sooner or later you are bound to running into someone and that is where to game is unique.
When you run into someone you will create a spectacular accident that usually involve more then one car if they are close together. When you cause an accident not only you will loose time on your clock but the game replays the accident right away for you to see like if it was not bad enough that you crashed in the first place :) This element is quite original and fun to watch plus at the end of your race they save all of your accidents and you can view them all or just the one that you prefer to see.
Since you race in city streets you need to beware of red lights. You can manage to just burn it but you need to do this in a skillful manner. Sometimes it is just not your fault like if you follow an other racer closely and he or she cause an accident then you might not have any choice but run into it. Other reasons might be an 18 wheeler making a large turn blocking the entire street and at the speed you are driving by the time you realize what is happening it is too late to stop so you just run right into it. The replay will allow you to see all this in details because the crash replay uses up to 16 unique camera angles. In your main menu you can select different game mode like Championship, Single Race, Head to Head, Special or Time Attack. There is also a place where you can view your High Score and view your accident in the Crash Replay Theater.

In the Championship mode there is 3 levels of difficulty; easy, medium and hard. Each mode has different cars to start with more can be unlock has you progress. You will then race against 3 computer opponents one course then others will be unlock as you succeed. In total there is 16 courses. The special mode contains 2 Secret modes called the Face Off where you race in an hidden vehicle that can be unlock after and in Survival you need to complete the course without crashing or else it is game over. The graphics are nice from close but further ahead it hard to distinguish where the traffic is exactly.
In the Head to Head you can only play with a friend, a 4 players mode would of been interesting to play. The control of the cars are very accurate and precise that is how you can manage to race with skills in the city streets. The good control mix with a great Gameplay makes this game very good. You will always be focus on what you do or else you will crash and the replay makes it sure you do not forget it. No matter how many times you race on a course it is never the same because there is always traffic everywhere plus the fact of many time your race against incoming traffic as well. That gives this game a lot of replay value.
As for the sound you can choose to listen to the game in Mono, Stereo, Dolby Surround or Dolby Digital. Burnout is a refreshing racing game that has this unique and original replay element that will entertain you for a long time and it is a must have in your collection if you love racing game. |
