Developed by Pitbull and published by Infogrames, Test Drive is a racing game and the first one on the Xbox where the sound effect was compose with the SoundMAX SPX tool. A few years ago Infogrames bought the Interactive division of Hasbro that is why when you start the game after the introduction movie of Test Drive that the game Pong will come up for you to play while the menu is loading. It is a very cool idea to have done that since you do not have to be bored while waiting and you will know when the loading is done because a song will start playing then you either choose to finish your game of Pong or start the game. This will happen always every time you have to wait for any loading.
For those who are not familiar with Pong, Atari introduce the famous Pong, a simple tennis video game in 1972 and was THE game to buy in 1975. Much has change since then :) In the Main menu you can choose between Quick Race, Single Race, Underground, 2 Players or Extra. Quick Race allows you to choose your car and street and race right away. Single Race is divided into 5 Game mode. Linear you ride in a Start-to-Finish-Line race. Circuit races are looping courses on city streets trying to stay ahead of your competition, Drag Racing pits you against an AI in a competition of acceleration and top speed on a straightaway. In Navigation Challenge racing you are given on-the-spot directions on how to navigate the course.
Cop Chase is where you choose your Cop Car between a Dodge Charge, Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R and a Dodge Viper GTS then you need go arrested fugitives. In the 2 players mode you can play with a friend these 3 Game Mode; Linear, Circuit or Drag Racing. In Extra you can see your records of all the Events that you have participated in and view the Statistics of each car.

There is 6 cars to view at the beginning; Lotus Elise 2000 Custom, Plymouth Hem Cuda 1971, Pontiac GTO 1967, Chevrolet Comaro Z28 1969, Toyota Supra 1998 and a Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 1970. The Underground is the main mode where you play the role of Dennis Black who is hired by Clack to replace him in Underground's races. You will do your first race in San Francisco as an initiation then move on to other city like Tokyo, London and Monte Carlo There is only 2 cars to choose from at first the Toyota Supra and the Plymouth Hem Cuda and has you progress you will be able to unlock cars like the Jaguard XK-R even Cop Cars like the Subaru Impreza 22B. In total there is over 20 cars to race with. When you race there are a lot of turns so there will be course path to indicate you where is the way to turn but the problem is that you do not see them until very late. They appear too late sometimes and you crash into them or walls. Does not matter how much you crash because there is no damage to cars at all it will only makes you loose time.
After a while you know the course so you know when to turn but it is a big draw back to the game. But if you manage to run face to the sun you will be amaze. It is the most beautiful sun there is on racing games now so therefore the reflections on cars or the lens glare are very realistic and well done. More cars, streets and cities would of had more depth to the game though.The control are done well plus you can configure your controller exactly the way you want too. But the first thing you will notice when you start the game is the sound not only it has a fabulous line up with artist like Moby, Alice Deejay, DMX and Crud.
Plus with the sound effects done with the SoundMAX SPX tool is truly makes a difference in the sound. Each car has their own sound plus the squealing of the tired are remarkably done since it is unique and not repetitive. Even though the game is short in the Underground mode Test Drive has other mode like Cop Chase that is fun to play plus cool cars to unlock and great sound effects and soundtrack. |
