In development for more then 2 years, Sony brings us a very original and unique game called ICO a 3D adventure role playing game that is blend with fighting, puzzle and strategy elements done exclusively for the PlayStation 2. Ico is a special child that was born with cute little horn coming out of his head. Well not everyone though the horns were so cute the people in his village though that the horns were more of a curse then anything else. Every misfortune like failed crops or illness was blamed on ICO.
The villagers felt so much fear that on his 12 birthday, ICO was taken from his home to be sacrificed. Horsemen brought him to be put him in a crypt alive to be sacrificed but he broke free of the tomb by rocking it until it felt off it's perch then broke open as it hits the ground freeing ICO but leaving him unconscious by the fall. But while he was unconscious ICO had a dream and a vision of a ghostly beauty that drives him to escape then when he wakes up and that is where your adventure starts. Now you will play this young ICO and the first thing you need to do is find the Princess Yorda then bring her with you so you can escape while battling the Evil Queen's spirits. This is a very unique game since for the first time, your adventure will end if you lose the life of someone else, usually you are the one being capture or killed in order to end the game but not in this one if the princess gets captured and dragged into the black portal and you do not get there in time to get her out of it the game will end.
With the R1 button you take her by the hand and bring her with you so that both of you can get out of the castle safely. If you leave her alone too long Spirits will come and bring her in the black portal. Even if she is with you that will not stop, the Evil Spirits they still can come after her but you can fight them off. The Spirits are evil because the Queen controls them as slaves and you will encounter more then one type like the Spiders Wraith but mostly they are black shadow monsters. The first weapon that you will get is a stick that can be use also to light torches. More weapons can be acquire as you progress in your game like a sword that carries essential magical powers and bombs plus you can also attack the spirits with ICO's horn if you lose your weapons, that is called lunging.

 ICO has different abilities like climbing chains, jumping, pulling, pushing, picking objects, activate levers, pressure switches and doors. He can also call Yorda if she can she will come to him and he can even bend down to help her climb, that is very well done by the way. The princess can also be useful to you like she can open doors that ICO can not plus the fact that you both need to be sitting on the couch while holding her hand in order to save the game. You will really feel like you are in a castle since the levels are vast and there is more then 30 levels that is why the camera could be improve, you see ICO from far sometimes too far. The camera has a function where you can do a close up but you can not do the opposite plus the fact that when you run in the close up the camera is totally out of focus either you are in the left or right but not in the middle.
The length of the game will be short for some but it would of stretched the storyline if was very long and maybe the story would not of been has good. Not only the story is very interesting but like I said before it very original to be able to bring a character this way through out the entire game. Plus the fact that they talk into their own unique language not only you can hear them talk you can even see it written sometimes that is very well done. You can also hear ICO breathing hard when he runs and the music blends well with the story so it gives us a great atmosphere.
The graphics are very well design you really can see the detailed architecture. Backgrounds are interactive also like you can see a wall then activate some type of a switch then an entire stairs way will appear make you feel like you are watching a movie of an old cattle actually. It is a beauty to watch the wind effect on the characters clothing and hairs, It is very interesting to just stay there in the wind and see how realistic it is done. ICO is a definitely a title that you want in your collection not only the game is fun, intriguing and mysterious to play but with everything combines makes it really a unique worth it adventure to play. |
