Control an Empire, and Explore the Galaxy ! |
Microprose, who brought us the award winning Civilization 2 and Master of Orion 2, is back, but this time with an in-depth Star Trek strategy game. In Star Trek: Birth of Federation you will take command of an empire and then go explore and conquer the galaxy in the 24th century, where you will meet different races. You need to conquer at least 60% of the galaxy to win in the Domination victory mode. In The Team play mode you need to form an alliance with another empire, then each must conquer 75% of the galaxy to win. The Vendetta is fun too. You need to eliminate 2 of your mortal enemies. For example, if you are the Romulan Star Empire you need to conquer the Federation and the Ferengi. While you play you will be able to do make alliances or start wars against other races that you encounter along your way. You will first need to choose the empire you want to rule. You have 5 empires to choose from: the Romulan Star Empire, the Ferengi Alliance, the Cardassian Union, the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets. You also have minor races like the Bajorans and Nausicaans to deal with. You will decide how many you want to have in the galaxy. Then you set up the galaxy where you will start your game. You have a default settings to help you start, then later if you want to start other games differently you will be able to do so in this menu. Then off you go to a short movie about the history of the empire you have chosen to command. In the main game, you will get the galactic window where you see where you are in the galaxy and that remains your main window throughout the game. When you encounter an other race you will hear a voice that tells you that you have a message. Then you go to the First Contact window where you will see a picture of the race and a Diplomatic report. " The Romulans declare war on the Cardassians " |
"Your main Galactic window" That will tell you how sympathetic that race is to your own so you can have a better idea if that race is more inclined to make strong diplomatic relations with you. It is helpful to see and study the other race because you will be in a better position to decide which race you want to make an alliance with and which to declare war on. Throughout your game you get in other races' territory or they get into yours. You then use the Diplomatic Relations window. This window will always show the picture of the aliens that you are talking to and what their message is. Then it is up to you to decide what you will do, start a war or make an alliance basically. Each war or alliance you make affects the outcome of your next turn. In between all this you need to manage your empire. You must oversee everything in order to function well, such as make sure you have enough food, allocate enough money for your espionage and sabotage intelligence agency. In total you have 7 major window to help you out Main, Galactic, Tactical Combat, Solar system, Intelligence, Diplomacy, Technology. Although it is not that easy to figure them out, when you do you will be ok. During the fighting you see the ship but the design and color leave much to be desired. It would be nice to have more details on all the races, so you can judge better how to deal with each of them, including the small races. It would have given the game even more depth. But besides that if you like Star Trek and strategy games will enjoy this one because you will feel right at home with the characters, their pictures, and behaviors. Meaning a Klingon snarls, a Ferengi snivels, and a Romulan plots just as you expect. |
