Ever wanted to be a King and rule your own Kingdom ?

Microprose is well know for their Civilization series and hopefully Majesty will expand into a series too.

Majesty is a fantasy kingdom simulation where you have the throne and rule your Kingdom in the land of Ardania. It is kind of a mix of Sim City, Civilization and Dungeon Keeper.

When you start the game, right away you will know you have a high quality game because the main menu is magnificent. You see a part of a room where you click on animated objects to choose what you want to do.

You can either play by yourself or in a multiplayer mode with up to 4 players.

Choose your quest

You have 19 epic quest to conquer in the single mode divided into 3 levels of difficulty: Beginner, Advanced, and Expert. You also have 4 hidden quests that can only be revealed to you if you succeed in specific quests. There is no specific order to start with because each one is unique like one might ask you to free a Prince or another to recover a stolen object. After you succeed in one quest, you can either continue to play or move on to the next one. The one that you have completed can be replayed and will not have the same map.

When you get familiar with the game there is an option called the Freestyle Scenarios to create your own. You will be able to tailor it to your own tastes by selecting the monsters, the victory conditions, landscape and the amount of gold you want to start with.

When you play the multiplayer mode you will have the same selection to do in order to create your game.

Palace at Level 3

When you start your Quest your advisor will talk to you and tell you what the situation and your goal is. Like an object has been stolen by a thief, and you need to retrieve it.

When you get to your kingdom you start at your Palace where you need to build and oversee the development.

You will need to erect some building in order to recruit specific heroes like Wizard Guild for up to four Wizard. All of the building has different benefit and can be upgraded to 1 or 2 levels. They also provide spells and object for you to purchase or research.

It is all alive you will actually see the peasant going to construct the building and you will see the progress of it. Over thirty buildings are available but not at the same time or in all the quests.

Because of that factor you will have different heroes available for you to create or not.

Nice Menu

Sixteen types of heroes can be recruited, all with their own name, personalities, behaviors and statistics.

The Heroes can only be selected after and it costs a specific amount of gold so you must make sure you have a marketplace to generate gold and your tax collector. All through the game your advisor will make suggestion to you. But all this is done while enemies comes and attack your peasants or your Palace, different from Dungeon Keeper where you can build in peace.

The heroes will go after the enemies by themselves but sometimes you need them to kill a specific enemy that is doing too much damage or destroying a building.

You then must attract them by a reward of gold by putting the Reward Flag on where or whom you want them to go after.

Guardhouse is on fire

The sound is where Majesty lacks the most. The main soundtrack is nice, but some variety would have been weclome. Also the characters will talk once in a while but it is very repetitive what they say. Like when a gnome gets killed she will say "but I am just a gnome". They can be quite annoying when you get attacked a lot. But some are fun to hear too like when your advisor is freaking out because you are low on gold he will say with a paniced tone, "your gold, your Majesty, your gold" more comments like that would have been welcome.

Majesty is a very exciting game for many reasons. First the graphics are quite nice and you can actually see the building being built or when they are on fire.

the gameplay is where it excels actually. All the quests can be replayed and each time with a different map and the fact that you can create your own scenarios makes this game replayable endlessly. The theme also is very original, being the king and ruling your kingdom in this indirect fashion.

Majesty is another outstanding game from Microprose that will please strategy fans and if your looking for a fun game that will keep you asking for more you will surely love Majesty.

Make sure to download the demo, even if you own the game, since it is a fully playable quest, called "Vampiric Revenge", that is not included in the final version. For those that don't own the game, it is a great way to experience what Majesty is all about.

For those who purchase the full version, you will get a special sneak preview of the soon to be released Dungeons & Dragons - Third Edition role-playing game rules set, due to be released in August 2000.
