| There is one
word that nearly everyone in the computer world knows:
Microsoft. This company has the lead or substantial
holdings in most major software markets, including
operating system, utilities, business applications, info
and entertainment, as well as web browsers. Microsoft,
has revolutionized the world of the home and business
computer with the interaction and completeness of their
software. With the arrival of the new millennium,
Microsoft has decided to bring out an updated and
enhanced version of its popular product, Microsoft Office
: Microsoft Office 2000. This new version of Office includes 8 programs: Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, Access, Power Point, Front Page and PhotoDraw. I will explain each of the programs briefly and tell you some of the new features that have been added to them since Office 97, the last version. Microsoft Word is surely the most popular of all these programs. This is a word processing program very useful in writing letters with grammar and spelling checker for over 80 languages that you can change at any time while you work. There are many things you can do with this program such as inserting an image in your text as clipart. Also you now copy and paste more then one item at a time. This new version also makes it easier for you to transform your word file into a webpage like this one. You still have animated assistants such as the little paperclip, as well as new ones like a kitten and a dog, to help you understand some commands or simply to remind you to save your work. Microsoft Excel allows you to create spreadsheets to make calculations or to create organized worksheets. Everything has been improved so you can enter data faster and easier, like with the new AutoFill feature where each cell will be created automatically as you get to the end of your list. Also, you can now E-mail your worksheet to another person with Outlook just by clicking one button. Microsoft Outlook is a program for receiving and creating E-mail. They made it smarter and faster to use. It can filter and remove junk mail from your inbox and now you can set it to dial and connect so it will retrieve your mail by itself. Microsoft Explorer is the famous web-browser that allows you to navigate on the internet. With one click, you can go to Outlook and check your new E-mail or create one. Also each user's individual profile can now store passwords to sites you visit. Microsoft Publisher can create, customize, and publish materials such as newsletters, brochures, flyers, catalogs, and Web sites. You can do great work quickly that will look very professional, and be ready for printing. They made Publisher more productive, with full support for commercial printing standards including 4 color process separation and spot color with a new wizard to better guide you along your way.

You can quickly find and retrieve information with the new interface. Microsoft PowerPoint is a program that can be used to create beautiful presentations to explain an idea or redesign a website with others. Like Word, you can put your own images or clipart in your presentations and you can also broadcast it to many others live through the internet. It's an easy way to create professional and effective presentations on the web, laptop, or even on a projector. Multiple monitors are now supported, you can view your work on one while you edit on the other. Microsoft FrontPage is a program to create Web Pages easily. It is the program I am currently using to create this Web Page. It is a little like Word, but you make Web Pages instead. FrontPage 2000 had been improved and refined on many levels to make it more productive and easier to use. For instance, you can now assign different levels of access to different groups of users. Microsoft PhotoDraw combines photo-editing and drawing tools in one program to create professional-looking graphics for Web pages and printed material. This program includes 20,000 professional images and clip art that you can automatically customize to get the results you want. Office 2000 also includes some business tools that help you create documents like a business plan or show you how to work with the Direct Mail Manager in order to create a high quality cost-effective direct mailing strategy. Although Office 2000 is a little bit expensive, Microsoft has a good solution for this problem: they have created different boxes for several uses: standard (249$ US, 4 programs), small business (249$ US, 5 programs), professional (349 $US, 7 programs) and premium (499 $ US, all the programs). Next year Microsoft will start renting some of their programs like Word and Excel over the internet. If you are looking for a program for your business and you do not have any current software, Office 2000 is the ideal program for you. It has everything that a business needs for your computer all in one. Of course you might not need to use all the programs on a daily basis, that is why you can customuze all the applications either to run on your computer or from the CD-ROM disc. Whether you want to update from Office 97 or simply repair some files, everything you need is on four discs and are very easy to access and use. Finally, Microsoft proves one more time that their skills are not limited to Windows. With Office 2000, you can have 8 complete outstanding programs to help do your work better than ever and look more professional. |
