Build a better Rome |
If you
were to take SimCity 2000, add a very fussy populace,
some cranky gods and the element of war, you would have
Caesar 3. The new world simulation that asks you to
take the reigns of city management in the time of the
roman empire. The game is complex but it comes with a large and informative manual that pretty much covers the entire game. The interface is very easy to use, in fact I didn't use the manual once so that will give you an idea how well the interface works and how good the built in help is. The game has two basic modes of play. Carrier mode and City construction kit. In Carrier mode you are give a certain amount of tasks to complete before you move on to the next city and the next challenge. As you go your rank increases also. You command all over your city and basically tell your people where to build stuff. Anyone who has played SimCity will know what I am talking about. You can build a wide choice of buildings to help you city along but in the early stages you are limited to only the basics. Housing, markets, farms and even some temples. You need to plan well because you have only so much cash and some fickle people to please. As the game goes along food becomes the trickiest thing to manage. You will need a lot of farms and Building near water is a good idea |
Your city in all it's glory markets to keep a large scale city running at peak level, so food management is essential. Pleasing the gods can also help or hinder you on your way. The 5 different gods have temples you can build and then make offerings at. Each one will help your city in various ways, from more food to better buildings. The graphics are very nice and are very crisp. The interface is much more intuitive that SimCity and other sim like games. Everything is laid out nicely and it's easy to get a handle on what to do. At times it can be a bit slow to navigate but with time you get through it a lot faster The sound is also quite nice with a lot of ambient noises and audio warnings. The music is ok and can be turned off for those who tire of "game music" quickly. No real downsides except the combat system. You do go to war once in a while and the combat system feels tacked on. You click and watch as your soldiers go off and do the fighting. Often times completely missing large hordes of the enemy. With addictive game play, a very slick interface and some pretty graphics Caesar 3 is a worthy sequel to what has become a somewhat overlooked series. If you want a game to kill time with, this is the one for you. |
